The morale stat represents a soldier's mental well-being. When shot at, soldiers make a morale check, rolling between 1 and 100. If this value is higher than a soldier's morale, then the soldier becomes pinned. The morale stat is modified by several variables, such as cover, being lead by an officer in a Banzai charge, and whether or not the soldier is prone. Soldiers gain one point of morale every wave to a maximum of 20, 0.25 points each time they kill an enemy but lose morale each time they are hit, shot at, see a friendly soldier explode or catch on fire, or when a highly experienced soldier is killed in action. Soldiers with less than 0 morale will attempt to flee unless possessive of the Elite trait.
